AI Cover Letters: Do They Actually Work?

AI can write a cover letter in seconds, but does it help or hurt your chances? Here's the honest take.

By Haseeb Kamran, Founder of VeloApply, 8+ years in recruiting · Updated July 24, 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: An AI cover letter works when you use it as a first draft and then do the part it cannot do: add the specific detail only you know. It fails when you send the draft untouched, because the generic version is instantly recognisable and says nothing a recruiter could not read off your resume. The realistic split is AI for structure and speed, you for the facts and the reason you want this job.

Do AI cover letters actually work?

Yes, with one condition that decides everything: whether you edit it.

A language model is genuinely good at the parts of a cover letter that are mechanical. Opening line, logical order, professional tone, correct length, clean grammar. Those are real problems for a lot of people, and getting them solved in thirty seconds is worth having.

What it cannot do is know anything. It does not know what you actually did in your last role, why you want this particular employer, or which of your experiences maps to the strange requirement in paragraph four of the posting. If you do not supply those, the letter contains no information, and a letter with no information is why the format has a bad reputation.

So the honest answer is that AI cover letters work about as well as the ten minutes you spend after generating one.

When does an AI cover letter help?

When does an AI cover letter hurt you?

Three failure modes, in order of how much damage they do.

Invented facts. Ask a model to make you sound impressive and it will happily produce a number you never achieved or praise for a company initiative that does not exist. Getting caught inventing an achievement does not cost you the role. It costs you the company, permanently.

Empty enthusiasm. Paragraphs about being passionate about innovation and excited by the opportunity to contribute. This is the default output when you give a model nothing to work with, and it is the fastest way to look like you applied to four hundred jobs this week.

Mismatched voice. A letter written in polished corporate English attached to a resume written plainly reads as two different people. Small, but recruiters notice it.

Can a recruiter tell it was written by AI?

Sometimes, and usually not for the reason people assume.

Nobody is running your letter through a detector. Those tools are unreliable and the incentive to use them is low. What a recruiter notices is emptiness. A letter that could be sent to any employer in the industry without changing a word tells them exactly how much thought went into it, and it would tell them that whether a human or a model wrote it.

Which is the useful reframe. The question is not whether it looks AI-written. The question is whether it could only have been written about you, applying to them. Two specific sentences settle that, and no detector matters after that point.

What separates a good AI draft from a bad one?

Element Untouched AI draft After ten minutes of editing
Opening lineI am writing to express my interest in the positionNames the role and one concrete reason you are a fit
Your experienceExtensive experience in a fast-paced environmentA specific result with a number and a timeframe
Why this employerI admire your commitment to innovationOne real detail about their product, market or team
SkillsRepeats the posting's requirements back at themShows one requirement being met by something you did
ClosingI look forward to the opportunity to discuss furtherShort, direct, no filler
LengthFour paragraphs of paddingThree tight paragraphs, roughly 200 words

Every row in the right column requires information the model does not have. That is the whole job, and it is why the tool cannot finish the letter for you.

How do you write one in ten minutes?

  1. Feed it real inputs. Paste the job posting and your actual resume. A model given nothing produces generic output, and that is a prompt problem rather than a model problem.
  2. Ask for three paragraphs, around 200 words. Left alone it will write far too much.
  3. Delete every sentence with no fact in it. This usually removes about a third of the draft, and the letter improves immediately.
  4. Add your one number. A result you personally produced, with scale or timeframe attached. This is the sentence that does the most work in the entire letter.
  5. Add your one specific reason. Something true about this employer that is not on their homepage banner. Their product, their market, a change they made.
  6. Read it aloud. Anything you would not say out loud gets cut. This catches mismatched voice faster than anything else.
  7. Check every claim. If you cannot back a statement in an interview, remove it now.

Steps four and five are the entire value of the exercise. Everything else is formatting.

Which parts should you never let AI write?

The same principle runs through our own product. The VeloApply Chrome extension drafts answers to application questions, then highlights every one for you to review before submitting. It never submits an application on your behalf, because a generated answer you have not read is exactly the failure mode described above.

Do recruiters still read cover letters in 2026?

Some do, many do not, and it varies more by role than by industry.

Where a cover letter still carries weight: smaller companies, roles where writing is part of the job, career changes that need explaining, and any application where you are not an obvious match on paper. Where it carries little: high-volume hiring, technical roles screened on skills, and any form where the field is marked optional and the pipeline is already full.

Both major platforms treat it as part of a standard application flow. Indeed's guidance on applying for a job covers cover letters as a normal step, and LinkedIn's Easy Apply documentation notes that your application details and answers can be saved and reused for future applications.

The practical rule: if it is required, write a good one. If it is optional and you have something specific to say, write a short one. If it is optional and you have nothing specific to say, skip it and put that time into your resume instead. A weak cover letter is worse than none.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI cover letters actually work?

They work when treated as a first draft and edited. AI handles structure, tone and length well, which is most of what stops people writing one at all. It cannot supply the specific results and the genuine reason you want that employer, and a letter without those says nothing. Sent untouched, an AI cover letter usually hurts more than it helps.

Can recruiters tell if a cover letter was written by AI?

Often, though not by using a detector. What gives it away is emptiness. If the letter could be sent to any company in the industry without changing a word, it reads as unconsidered regardless of who wrote it. Two specific sentences, one result of yours and one real detail about the employer, remove the problem entirely.

Is it cheating to use AI for a cover letter?

No more than using a template, a grammar checker or asking a friend to review it. What matters is that every claim in the final letter is accurate and that the letter reflects you. Inventing achievements is the real problem, and that is dishonest whether a person or a model wrote the sentence.

Do I still need a cover letter in 2026?

It depends on the application. Write a good one where it is required, or where you are a career changer, applying to a smaller company, or not an obvious match on paper. Where it is optional and you have nothing specific to say, skip it. A weak cover letter is worse than no cover letter.

How long should a cover letter be?

Around three paragraphs, roughly 200 to 250 words, on a single page. AI tools default to writing far more than this, so the length instruction has to be explicit in your prompt and checked afterwards.

What should I never let AI write in a cover letter?

Numbers, achievements and any claim about the company. Models will invent plausible details that a recruiter can check in seconds. Also write your own reason for leaving a role and anything touching salary or availability, since those carry consequences you will have to stand behind.
